This is expected behaviour. We are using SBS 2011. Doing so will cause DNS issues, and can break other network functions such as DHCP and the SBS wizards, in addition to losing Microsoft support if you have issues. You're right performance is a big issue, there's no point having the VPN if it takes an hour for Revit locals to sync to the central. With the SBS 2008 product, we added the ability to work with domain partners directly inside of the product to obtain that domain name, and also configure it.
